The Anthony

Dates:

1887-1888

Location: Northwest corner Walnut & Jackson Streets, Muncie, Indiana
Architects: Williams & Otter of Dayton, Ohio
Cost: slightly under $100,000

The Anthony was completed on January 31, 1888, at a cost of slightly less than $100,000. It was built for Charles H. Anthony. The north half of the building was demolished c.1942. Originally both facades were nearly identical except that the Walnut Street facade had all large windows. A four-sided dome originally topped the corner tower. The staircase below the south oriel window has a large stone arch with "The Anthony" carved into it. This has been covered over with wood siding. The 1920s was a dark period in the building's history. At that time the local headquarters of the KKK occupied part of the building. An unsympathetic c.1965 storefront remodeling of the front part of the building leaves much of its beauty covered at street level. The westernmost storefront on Jackson Street has one of its decorative iron columns still visible. The interior of the second floor retains much of its original woodwork. The windows of the upper floors are extremely large, offering expansive views of the downtown area.
