The original Jefferson High School was built during 1910-1911 to replace the 1890 LaFayette High School. The building was occupied in January, 1912. Picture and detailed floor plans of the building were featured in HIGH SCHOOL BUILDINGS Compiled By William C. Bruce, Milwaukee, The American School Board Journal, 1913. It was doubled in size by the addition of the Annex (1927-1928), which contained a large gymnasium and classrooms. The Annex opened September 10, 1928. The building was replaced by the new Jefferson High School (1967-1969) on S. 18th Street. It was briefly used as Tippecanoe Jr. High School. In 1982 the Annex was demolished leaving the original 1911 building. It was occupied by IVY Tech State College until about 2000, and is now being renovated as senior apartments. The current owner is Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services, and the project architect is Schmidt Associates of Indianapolis.

The building had been unsympathetically remodeled in the early-1980s, with replacement windows, and dropped ceilings. The beautiful glass-roofed bay window at the northwest corner of the building, was destroyed during the 1980s window replacement. New windows are being added which suggest the style of the original divided-light windows and fill the full window openings. The project has the potential to greatly revitalize the N. 9th Street corridor between the historic Centennial and Jefferson neighborhoods.
