This church was dedicated January 21, 1906. It is located across the street from Washington School, in the Jefferson Historic District. The congregation was organized in 1886, having split off from the First German Reformed Church after a dispute over the Lord’s Prayer. At this time, a 40’x60’ frame foot church, with a 20’x25’ room on the back, was built at what is now 1018 Elizabeth Street. By 1901, the church was known as the German Evangelical or St. John’s Evangelical Church. In 1903, the frame church building was damaged by fire, and was demolished. The parsonage, which stood on the site of the current church, was moved to the site of the old church about 1904, but has since been demolished. The current brick church was built in 1905. The stained glass windows are said to have been imported from Germany.
In 1953 or 1954, the congregation returned to the First German Reformed Church and the building was sold to the Pentecostal Church of God. The building is now owned by the Word of Life Family Church.
