Greene County Courthouse

Dates: 1885-1886
Location: Public Square, Bloomfield, Indiana
Architect: George W. Bunting of Indianapolis
Contractors: McKay & Bushman
Cost: $60,800
REMODELED: 1954
Addition: 2006-2007

This is the third Greene County Courthouse. Originally the four corners of the building had pyramidal roofs, as did the tower (see the Johnson County Courthouse in Franklin). The tower was originally brick with metal in imitation stone. It was almost identical to the towers of the Clinton and Johnson County Courthouses, but with a plain pyramidal hipped roof.

In 1954 the courthouse was extensively remodeled. The attic story and roofs of the four corner pavilions were removed, and the cornice was replaced by a new plain brick and limestone parapet. The pediment over the entrance was replaced by a plain stone band. The tower roof was removed, as were three of the four clock faces, and the tower sheathed entirely in plain limestone. New fireproof floors were installed and the courtroom was remodeled. The entrance steps were replaced and the building was tuckpointed during 1994-1995. The original mortar was likely color-matched to the brick, unlike the present bright white mortar.

During 2006-2007, a new addition was built on the rear of the building and the original building renovated.
