This building, built 1853-1854 as the Eastern School. Strother Moore was the contractor and possibly the architect. The building originally cost $11,000, and was probably a simple square Greek Revival building. Brown was hired to remodel it in 1870 and made several additions to the earlier building. It was demolished in 1900 to make way for the new Washington School by J. F. Alexander & Son. This is the only site in Lafayette occupied continuously by a public school since 1854.
