The DeKalb County Courthouse & Jail was designed by Eckel and Mann, the St. Joseph, Missouri firm which also designed the Nodaway County Jail (about 60 miles away) and the Pottawattamie County Jail about 160 miles away). The jail was attached to the rear of the courthouse and contained eight cells, apparently on a single level. Two hospital rooms were also included in the jail wing. It remained in operation until 1938, when the courthouse and jail building was demolished.
24 miles to the east in Gallatin, stands the Daviess County Jail, another rotary jail.
A genealogy page for DeKalb County has a drawing of the DeKalb County Courthouse. It is the lower image, with the jail wing visible on the right-hand side of the courthouse.
